I remember as a child checking out books from the library during the summer. I remember as a teen reading 2, 3, 4 or more novels each week all summer (I am sure much to the dismay of my mom who wanted more chores and help from me). I remember reading the night away. I remember the summers at BYU when I was taking fewer, if any, classes so I had time to read for pleasure. I had a list of books then that I wanted to read. I think I read them all. Mostly, I remember summer as a time to escape into a good story.
With that in mind, I confess, I read another Louis L'Amour novel last night. Kearney McRaven, the protagonist, is my son Alex's age. Just 17. He is being relentlessly pursued by relatives he didn't even know existed who want his inheritance, which he also did not know existed. They killed his father. They follow him back and forth across the country. He piles up loyal friends (and horses) along the way and decides who he wants to be and what he wants to do. And, of course, he gets the girl in the end.
