Sandra Dallas deals with many disturbing themes in her novels, all of which, at least that I have read, are set in 1800s or early 1900s, often in a prairie town. I think we think society is more depraved now, but it seems that domestic violence and substance abuse and sorrow are unfortunately unbounded by time or place or people. She is able to write about these things without describing every little detail, or depicting them graphically. But, through her writing we feel the emotions of the victims and have a great desire to see the perpetrators brought to justice. I was excited to see that she has written a novel, True Sisters, about the Martin Handcart company, released in April 2012. I am putting it on my summer reading list!
