I was interested in reading this for two reasons. First, I enjoyed the Sycamores book and second, the main part of this story was how the family was dealing with grandma Rose's aging, occasional dementia and end of life preparations. Because of my recent, extensive interactions with my parents (who are not dying and are not that old) I was curious how I would feel about what happened to Rose. Unfortunately, I did not really get emotionally attached to Rose and I struggled to really identify with most of the other characters as well.
Throughout the story, Rose wrote personal essays in a homemade journal and conveniently left the journal out for Kate to find. These essays explored Rose's life experiences and Kate read lots of symbolic meaning into the stories. Sometimes I felt the essays were written with more clarity that Rose seemed to exhibit in her regular interactions with people. I had a hard time believing the author Rose and the cantankerous old lady Rose were the same person. I did not like the small italicized print used for the essays.
This was a sweet story but not ultra compelling or memorable for me.
